my little sister moved up to seattle to live on her own for the first time. she asked me to make her some cheap furniture for her new place. after some thoughtful consideration, a few hours of trash-picking, a three hour drive north, and two boxes of screws, the following pieces emerged.
salvaged dimensional douglas fir, OSB, pine, 3″ general purpose screws.
constructed 2008.
laying out the tabletop on the floor.
adding legs.
the table and chairs were fun and fast to build because i had pre-cut and planned the pieces well. it was just a matter of screwing them together the right way.
the bookshelf took a little longer, and felt a little less polished as an idea.
nevertheless all of it was finished after five hours.
despite the strangeness, the bookshelf works, the second shelf supported my entire weight.
i also made a couple of really quick coffee tables. this one reminded us of a small boat.
i enjoyed making this piece because the composing felt natural and went together quickly.
the chairs made a nice little family of objects and they were conveniently pre-painted this charming hospital green color. i like the color as a contrast to the red-brown of the fir.
the table and chairs also make a nice family.

okay, that bookshelf is incredible!

hahhaha. okay, so just so everyone knows, (i promised i would add this…) the crack in the seat of the chairs is for a definite reason: girl’s jeans are very poorly made/uncomfortable and there is always a seam/belt loop/too much fabric right in the ass, right where i sit down. this crack in the chair allows that uncomfortable seam to sit on air while your behind can comfortably sit on wood.
basically awesome.

also, the bookshelf is my favourite thing that you made me. (i may need more. halfprice + job + brandon paying me back = lots more books than i have shelves for)

also, that coffee table we used as a bench and thus broke… is now a new game, still being used! haha.. and i used my new hammer/screwdriver thingy and i couldn’t get the screws in any tighter and so everything is still wobbly… i don’t know what to do about this.
