windfall oregon white oak slab, reclaimed red & white oak lumber, recycled vise.

finally a semblance of a proper workbench for my shop. the top came from an arborist friend of mine, it was cut from the log with a chainsaw, ripped to width with a circular saw to establish reference and finished with a handsaw, then flattened and surfaced using an adze and hand-planes.

getting the top ready took a couple of days.

the stretchers are half-lap dovetailed to the legs and fixed with four inch wood screws. there is no glue in any of the joinery. the vise is a quick-release wilcox salvaged from an estate sale.

the legs on the front edge are joined using a rising-dovetail, a self-wedging impossible looking joint without glue. they are flush to the front edge of the bench to facilitate clamping large pieces against the side of the bench.

all the wood for the legs was salvaged red oak from a pallet manufacturing facility in portland.

birch veneer plywood, 13″ industrial casters, custom mixed milk-paint, hand-rubbed varnish-oil.

rover was a three-day project that began as this lively sketch drawn by the client. the concept was to create a coffee-table on industrial casters with a space that could convert between table surface and ottoman.

this shows the shelves underneath the table before the top was attached.

traditional milk-paint is all natural, very easy to apply, and capable of producing a durable color finish which can vary in appearance from a wash to opaque color, depending on how many coats are applied.

the bigness of these casters was enjoyable, but the printed warning on the side of the tire was probably the best part. these 13″ casters warn anyone who reads that they are “not for highway use.”

the white square in this photo is a loose panel within the top which can be flipped between an orange surface matching the rest of the top and the underside which will hold an ottoman cushion.
